Boys put their faith into tackling graffiti

30 Jun, 2009 10:45 AM
TEENAGE boys from St Albans Anglican Multicultural Bible Ministry (MBM) will spend Saturday painting over graffiti in Central Park at Rooty Hill.

Youth Pastor Matt Sparks said the initiative came from the boys to show they were serious about making a difference.

``They're hoping to clean up the whole fence that runs along the park, which also acts as a back fence to some of the houses in the neighbourhood,'' Mr Sparks said.

He said the event was one of a number of ways MBM youth members planned to work for their community.

''No doubt the graffiti will come back eventually, but here are some young people wanting to help clean up their local area, which I think is a great thing,'' he said.

Youth group leader Dave Laurence said the boys were excited to get out and work with their hands.

``Teenagers can sometimes tend to be a bit selfish, thinking mostly of themselves and their problems,'' he said.

``I think this will make them think about others.

``It's also important for people in this community to know that not all young people want to spray paint other people's property and break into houses.

``Some of them are trying to do good things.''

Isaac Viglione, 14, wants to ``put his faith into action''.

``God tells us to serve our community by doing good things,'' Isaac said.

``There are a lot of young people just wandering around Rooty Hill, we want to introduce these people to Jesus so they can be saved.''

The boys plan to hold the event every year, as well as other activities, such as maintaining a section of road.
