A NIGHT out at Rooty Hill RSL to see a band turned into a nightmare for a wheelchair-bound Canadian tourist last Tuesday.
The 35-year-old, who asked that his name not be published, is recovering from serious head injuries after he was robbed and repeatedly bashed during a vicious attack at Mt Druitt station at around 11pm.
Two boys, aged 15 and 16, have been refused bail, charged with robbery and grievous bodily harm.
Mt Druitt Superintendent Wayne Cox described the assault as senseless and horrific.
``It's disturbing to think that two young men could do this to someone in a wheelchair,'' he said.
Police insist the attack was unprovoked, despite claims the victim was evicted from Rooty Hill RSL earlier in the night.
Superintendent Cox declined to comment on the events leading to the bashing.
He told the Star on Friday that the victim was still in hospital.
``It will be some time for his injuries to mend before he'll be capable enough to tell us what happened,'' Superintendent Cox said.
The victim has been in a wheelchair for five years since he was injured in a snowmobile accident.
He was living in Mosman with his Australian girlfriend Kristin Sharrock, who he met at a Pearl Jam concert in Los Angeles last year.
The couple had planned to go to Canada in May, where his sister is due to give birth.
Ms Sharrock left her boyfriend's bedside the morning after the attack to speak to media.
She described her boyfriend as wonderful, kind, generous and strong.
``He didn't deserve what happened,'' Ms Sharrock said as she fought back tears.
``This has made me feel sick to my stomach.
``He came out to Australia for me, so to make the phone call to his family was hard enough. His sister is in a state of shock and his mother is very distressed.''
