SOPHISTICATION is a word not often associated with western Sydney.
That's expected to change, following the grand opening of StMarys Leagues Club's new brasserie, Watergrill, last Tuesday.
The 300-seat restaurant is in stage one of the club's master plan.
Childhood friends and co-owners Anthony Costanzo and Con Dedes ventured west, following successful restaurants at the Kirribilli Club and Sydney Rowing Club.
Dedes at Sydney Rowing Club won best club restaurant and casual dining accolades at the 2009 ClubsNSW Awards for Excellence.
``We saw a potential market out here, where we believed there wasn't a great deal in what we do,'' Costanzo said.
``We've found a lot of our customers at the Kirribilli Club and Sydney Rowing Club come from the west.
``The only difference is the water views.''
Costanzo promises value for money and excellent service.
He recommends the hot and cold seafood platter for $35, while the mezze sharing plate of grilled haloumi, chorizo, marinated olives, hummus, baba ghanoush and pita bread ``should kick a few goals''.
``Our pork ribs are a specialty. They're cooked for eight hours so the meat is tender and falls off the bone.''
The chicken tandoori pizza and blue swimmer crab salad with avocado, spanish onions, cherry tomatoes and a honey mustard dressing are tipped to be popular. All desserts are $7.50 ($8 on weekends) and include mixed berry creme brulee, baked ricotta cheesecake, chocolate and sticky-date puddings, tiramisu, gelato and a cheese platter. The kids' menu includes sausages, chicken nuggets and battered fish, all served with chips.
Club members can buy a meal and get a second half price in February. Watergrill is open daily from noon to 9pm.
