THE recent return of buses to Whalan and North StMarys has prompted disadvantaged commuters across Mount Druitt to speak up and fight for their services to be reinstated.
The Save Our Bus Services group was formed to fight for axed services in Whalan.
Now that part of their aim has been achieved, the group has expanded to fight on the behalf of other inconvenienced commuters across the Mount Druitt region.
A big turn-out is expected at a public forum at Whalan Community Hall on Saturday, November7 between 10am and noon.
Local state MPs Allan Shearan and Richard Amery, Transport Workers Union representatives and Busways officials have confirmed they will attend.
Not all Whalan commuters are pleased with the return of limited services along Bululo Drive.
The group's next goal is to get the axed 755 service reinstated.
Residents along Popondetta Road and surrounding streets have found it tough with no direct services to Mount Druitt and now have to walk to Luxford Road. Gasmata Crescent commuters also remain stranded.
``The 755 route ran for 43 years without any complaints as it connected every suburb across Mount Druitt,'' said group spokeswoman Sonyia Hofherr.
Group chairwoman Joan Forrester said:
``We're grateful to get back what we got because we didn't expect anything but there's still a lot of contempt.
``Our goal is get something back to keep everyone happy.''
The scrapped 755 service has also inconvenienced Shalvey commuters.
Many were unaware that they must go to a different bus stop to catch the 758 StMarys to Mount Druitt route and that some services terminate in Emerson Street.
The new changes came after routes were altered this year because of rock-throwing attacks.
A pensioner crippled with arthritis who didn't want her name published found out the hard way last week when it took an hour to struggle home with her shopping from Emerson Street.
``The bus companies are using the rock-throwing attacks as an excuse,'' she said.
Residents have challenged Transport Minister David Campbell to face the music at Whalan Community Hall on Saturday, November7.
''We're not holding our breath though,'' Mrs Forrester said.
