Police condemn Facebook speculation over Colyton car crash

08 Feb, 2010 03:31 PM
ST MARYS police today castigated Facebook users for naming crash victim Bobby Vourlis, before police had identified him and informed the family.

Bobby Vourlis, 17, and two others, Chris Naylor, 19 and Kelsie Coleman, 15, died in a car crash at Colyton yesterday. Police are still investigating.

St Marys crime manager Detective Inspector Anthony Holton said no one should inform a dead person's family of their loss before the police do.

''It's important that were 100 per cent sure before we release the name,'' Inspector Holton said.

Senior Sergeant Peter Jenkins said there was also too much speculation about what caused the accident.

''I urge people to stop speculating; I urge people to come forward if they think they have information,'' Sergeant Jenkins said.

''Speculation hurts our investigation, more importantly it hurts the victims' families. Tell us what you know.''

He repeated police warnings for motorists to take care, especially during wet weather.

''Drive to the conditions, drive to your abilities,'' Sergeant Jenkins said.

''Tragedies can be avoided, that is what's so frustrating.''
