PETER Garrett, who has lived in the St Marys and Mount Druitt area most of his life, has set up a business to help parents with babies who just won't sleep.
And with our young population, there's bound to be some sleep-deprived families.
After a redundancy from his previous job, and what he believed to be a shortage of qualified people in western Sydney in that line of work, Mr Garrett established Baby Nights for families in the Penrith Valley and western Sydney.
With a background in social work, Mr Garrett has also trained with Adelaide's child sleep doctor Brian Symon with whom he remains in contact with if he needs to draw on his expertise.
Mr Garrett can make home visits to establish a personal plan dealing with such things as the baby's sleeping habits and feeding.
``The main thing that I do is to help them help themselves,'' he said.
A father of nine, Mr Garrett doesn't recall having a problem getting them to sleep.
But a lot of mothers, he said, were what he called ``hard-wired''.
``They can't help themselves, they have to respond [to the baby's crying].''
But babies, he said, could have a ``full bag of theatrics'' and could cry a bit louder or longer if someone doesn't respond.
Of course, parents should respond if their baby is unwell for example, ``but we're talking about normal cries when the baby won't sleep at night''.
