Vocal dancers find harmony in motion

30 Jun, 2009 10:55 AM
DANCERS from One Move One Voice celebrated with many voices and many moves in their first public performance at St Marys this month.

One Move One Voice aims to unite young people from all cultures within St Marys and from surrounding areas through dance.

Project co-ordinator Dante Barcoma, a St Marys resident, said: ``I was on cloud nine when I saw the presentation.''

He said dance was a space in which people of all backgrounds could meet.

``There they can talk about how they feel,'' he said.

Project worker Eduardo Delaguiado, of Rooty Hill, said the more young people could interact with each other, the more they could deal with issues that affected them.

``When they see each other dancing and singing, they

get the courage to express themselves,'' Mr Delaguiado said.

One Move One Voice is funded by Penrith Council as part of its Magnetic Places neighbourhood renewal program.

The Philippine Australian Community Services, the Information and Cultural Exchange and Sydney West Multicultural Centre also support it.

Mr Delaguiado said: ``We are teaching people how to better integrate into the community.''

Mr Barcoma said one problem was in finding dances all young people wanted to do.

``They come from many different cultures and have varied talents and cultural orientations,'' he said.

``We're hoping that can all be integrated into hip-hop.''

Mr Barcoma said he knew that was an ambitious aim, but he believed great performances would come out of it.

``It's a way to promote unity in diversity while celebrating individuality,'' he said.
