Walkers make million-dollar mark

03 Nov, 2009 10:07 AM
AFTER seven years of playing host to the Cancer Council's Relay For Life event, Blacktown residents have helped raise more than $1million for research.

Over the weekend 82 teams gathered for the event at Blacktown Olympic Park.

Together they raised $114,000 for the cause.

The event was officially declared open by Blacktown mayor Charlie Lowles and fellow councillor and Cancer Council ambassador Kathie Collins.

Before the teams started their 24-hour trek around the track, cancer survivors completed an honorary lap.

Many activities took place throughout the event, including a Miss Rally competition, with seven men taking to the stage to show their feminine side.

``The weekend has been an overwhelming success,'' said Blacktown Relay For Life chair Peter Filmer.
