Willmot tenants live in fear

07 Feb, 2012 12:37 PM
Acting Mt Druitt Superintendent Grant Bissett insists recent steps to improve safety at a NSW Housing over-55s complex in Willmot are working, despite tenants' fears for their lives.

Mount Druitt hit headlines for the wrong reasons again after fears of elderly tenants at Derwent retirement complex were aired on A Current Affair on Monday(February 6).

They claim youth gangs harrass them, trespass and damage their homes on a daily basis.

This included eight broken windows within two nights.

Bernie Smith can't sleep at night after youths threatened his life.

''They said they'll get me and burn down the unit while I was inside,'' he told A Current Affair.

Another tenant said he felt like a prisoner in his own home while a woman said the youths should be locked up in a home and taught some manners.

Detective Inspector Bissett said some of footage of the youths aired was filmed before the safety audit in November.

Police have been working in partnership with Housing NSW and Blacktown Council to resolve residents fears since the safety audit.

''I believe the strategies put in place are working,'' Det Insp Bissett told the Star the following day.

''This includes increased plain-clothed police patrols.''

He admitted anti-social bevaviour involving youths is an ongoing problem in Willmot.

Two male youths are currently before the courts in relation to malicious damage at the complex three weeks ago.

One is in custody while the other is on bail.

Det Insp Bissett encouraged tenants to alert police and report incidents.

The message was echoed by ward five Blacktown councillor Jackie Donaldson

''It's really important people report any incident to police so there's a record of it,'' she said.

Most incidents are reported, its a long way from MT Druit PS to Willmot.

By the time they arrive the locals have fled.

Time for Housing NSW should do the same as Macquarie Field etc,

The police and system know who the trouble makers are.

Move them out and spread them apart.

All thats currently working is these "troubled youth" are moving into neigbouring communities spreading their antisociall behavior to others.

A few bad people from Mt Druitt make the whole area look bad... I live in Mt Druitt and wan't to move out but can't afford too as I am on a low income. I am trying to send my kids to good schools in another area but as soon as they see my address I can't get any further. What am I to do? I don;t want my kids going to schools in the area...

The thugs who go around robbing, terrorising, vandalising and harrassing the poor residents at Derwent, Willmot are the lowest of low. Those low lifes are picking on elderly, disabled and terminally ill people and that is unforgiveable and downright disgusting. Jail is too good for them. I know people are feeling so strongly about this problem the feeling is if the police, dept of housing and council don't do something to stop this vigilantes will take action soon and those thugs will then know how it feels to be on the other side of the fence. That's what they deserve!

There is a terrific program at Emerton Leisure Centre on Friday nights called Midnight Basketball. There's a free meal, games of basketball and a workshop giving young people life skills

Some of these bored young people should give it a go instead of hanging around causing trouble.
