Acting Mt Druitt Superintendent Grant Bissett insists recent steps to improve safety at a NSW Housing over-55s complex in Willmot are working, despite tenants' fears for their lives.
Mount Druitt hit headlines for the wrong reasons again after fears of elderly tenants at Derwent retirement complex were aired on A Current Affair on Monday(February 6).
They claim youth gangs harrass them, trespass and damage their homes on a daily basis.
This included eight broken windows within two nights.
Bernie Smith can't sleep at night after youths threatened his life.
''They said they'll get me and burn down the unit while I was inside,'' he told A Current Affair.
Another tenant said he felt like a prisoner in his own home while a woman said the youths should be locked up in a home and taught some manners.
Detective Inspector Bissett said some of footage of the youths aired was filmed before the safety audit in November.
Police have been working in partnership with Housing NSW and Blacktown Council to resolve residents fears since the safety audit.
''I believe the strategies put in place are working,'' Det Insp Bissett told the Star the following day.
''This includes increased plain-clothed police patrols.''
He admitted anti-social bevaviour involving youths is an ongoing problem in Willmot.
Two male youths are currently before the courts in relation to malicious damage at the complex three weeks ago.
One is in custody while the other is on bail.
Det Insp Bissett encouraged tenants to alert police and report incidents.
The message was echoed by ward five Blacktown councillor Jackie Donaldson
''It's really important people report any incident to police so there's a record of it,'' she said.
