Youth get eco-friendly

03 Nov, 2009 11:09 AM
LINDSAY MP David Bradbury has praised 20 Green Corp graduates who recently completed the 26-week environmental program.

The Federal Government-funded program teaches youth aged 17 to 20 about helping community groups with environmental conservation.

Programs at Huntington Reserve and Ropes/South Creek taught youth essential skills, which will help them find paid employment.

They planted more than 13,900 trees, propagated more than 5500 seedlings and removed weeds from 1.7 hectares of land.

``These Green Corps programs have provided direct benefits to our local community by enhancing the sites for community enjoyment while improving the ecology of both sites,'' Mr Bradbury said.

Huntington Reserve participants graduated from Certificate II in Conservation and Land Management, while the Ropes/South Creek team completed Certificate I.

Both teams received first-aid and occupational health and safety training.

``Green Corps projects have been a great success across Australia,'' Mr Bradbury said.

``That's why the Government, through its new Jobs Services Australia system, which commenced on July 1 this year, will continue Green Corps activities as part of work experience for job seekers.''
