The Penrith Panthers, Hawkesbury Jets and Springwood Scorchers men's teams all recorded victories in the first round of the NSW State League Basketball competition.
The Panthers were missing Ben Hawkesley and Bruce Wells but were always in command in their 100-72 win over the Glebe Magic, on Saturday afternoon at Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre.
The home team led 29-11, 51-29 and 70-51 at the end of the first three quarters respectively. before powering home to a 28-point win.
The Jets were equally impressive at the Hawkesbury Indoor Sports Centre South Windsor on Saturday night, also leading all the way in a strong 73-52 win over the Bankstown Bruins.
The biggest upset of the first round (on paper) was undoubtedly the 65-62 win by the Scorchers over the highly-ranked Sutherland Sharks, who were predicted to be one of the powerhouse teams in Pool D.
The Sharks led early but were run down by an enthusiastic Scorchers squad, which "played exceptional team defence" in the words of head coach Leon Hine.
Having said that, the Scorchers only grabbed victory on the bell, with a well-timed three-point shot from guard Evan Hine.
