 A bad weekend all round

A bad weekend all round

19 Jan, 2010 08:48 AM
IT was a weekend Penrith Cricket Club would rather forget, after all five grades lost their respective one-day matches against St George.

The club hopes to bounce back this weekend in what could be first grade's biggest challenge this summer.

The club takes on Northern Districts in limited overs matches this Saturday.

First grade host at Howell Oval, seconds play at Waitara Oval, thirds are at Cook Park, St Marys and fourths at Asquith Oval while fifths host at Rance Oval, Werrington.

First grade back up on Sunday in a Twenty20 Cup qualifying final against Fairfield-Liverpool at Rosedale Oval, Warwick Farm at 2.30pm.

The winner advances to the semi-finals at Blacktown Olympic Park's new cricket centre on Australia Day next Tuesday, where the final will be played that night.

Penrith expect strike bowler Josh Lalor to back up after playing for NSW Second XI in a three-day Futures League match against Victoria at Hurstville Oval, which begins today.

``I think we'll do very well in the Twenty20, as it suits our game at the moment,'' club secretary Ross Graham told the Star yesterday.

``We're going through a rebuilding phase as we lost a lot of senior players last season.

``Last weekend was disappointing but clearly reflected the high number of young personnel in the club, who will be better for the experience next season.''

Penrith's under-21s Poidevin-Gray side has qualified for next month's semi-finals.

A solid knock of 62 from club captain Luke Morrissey couldn't save Penrith first grade on Saturday, who were bowled out for 164.

St George reached the total with one over to spare and four wickets in hand.

Ryan Smith was the pick of the Penrith bowlers with a three-wicket haul.

Tough day at the crease: Penrith first grade were 5-46 at one stage before the lower order resurrected the innings to reach 164. But it wasn't enough as St George reached the total with one over to spare at Hurstville Oval. Picture: Lisa McMahon
