A top day of team effort

17 Nov, 2009 10:01 AM
EVERYONE was a winner at Popondetta Park last Thursday.

Almost 200 year 5 and 6 pupils from Plumpton, William Dean and Glendenning public schools took part in a PEC sports gala day.

PEC stands for Participation, Effort and Co-operation, and it was a non-competitive gala day.

The children were put together in mixed teams to play soccer, touch football, netball and softball.

Points were awarded on teams' demonstration of the core PEC values, rather than results.

The aim of the day, which is now in its third year, was to give those who hadn't represented their school in sport a chance to play in a team.

They had been preparing for the day since last term, where they were coached by 20 Plumpton High School students over a six-week period.

Their coaches had to pass an intensive Australia Sports Commission accredited course and played an active role in the co-ordination of the day, including the ordering of medallions.

Co-ordinator Amanda Cook said: ``The aim was to get to know each other for when they start at Plumpton High School. It was an opportunity to develop positive social relationships so that we can provide a seamless transition when the kids start high school.''

Participants received great support and encouragement from their coaches.
