HANNAH Koduah, Teela Waaka and Christina Maitinez are a true underdog story after collecting bronze at the Australian National Sport Aerobic Championships in Melbourne last month.
It capped off a year-long campaign for the Mt Druitt-based Bethel Christian School students.
``We were very excited to win the bronze as it was very competitive,'' head aerobics coach Rachael
Vittorias said.
``We only have 15 to 30 kids in each grade, so we are a small school and there aren't that many girls to represent us. Also, while we rehearse in our classrooms or playground many other schools have massive gymnasiums.''
It was the first time the year 8 girls had competed interstate.
``They showed really good attitude, confidence and unwavering sportsmanship,'' Vittorias said.
To secure their fairytale victory, the girls performed a 2-minute routine, which Vittorias described as a ``high energy dance routine with aerobic movement''.
``The girls had to lift themselves off the ground with two hands, do push-ups on one foot and perform high leg kicks,'' she said.
``It's a complex judging process and scores are awarded or deducted for strength, flexibility, co-ordination and the level of artistic gymnastics within the routine.''
While rehearsing in Melbourne, the girls received a confidence boost in the form of world sport aerobic champion and So You Think You Can Dance star Anthony Ikin.
``He is a friend of mine and gave the girls some pointers which was amazing,'' Vittorias said.
In preparation for the championships, the girls trained at school for 1 hours every week with Vittorias and fellow coach Sharni Wood.
``We compete for fun. Our intention is not to win, win, win, but with their positive attitude they just keep winning,'' Vittorias said.
