Have fun, help kids

AS CHILDHOOD obesity rates hit record levels, a North St Marys resident has challenged the community to let feet do the talking.

Susan O'Brien has organised a fun run for Saturday at Whalan Reserve.

Proceeds will be donated to The Children's Hospital at Westmead for its childhood obesity and diabetes work.

Ms O'Brien hopes the five-kilometre fun run will become an annual event.

Participants can choose to run or walk.

``It's for serious competitors or you can dress up in costume,'' Ms O'Brien said.

``Many people in low socio-economic areas aren't aware of the problem,'' she said.

``My goal is to bring some hope back into the community.''

There will be a jumping castle, stalls and raffles on the day.

The cost is $10 and includes a sausage sizzle and bottle of water later.

Prizes will be awarded.

Organisations that have come on board so far to support the event include Franklins supermarket Werrington, Bunnings Warehouse Minchinbury, Sydney Water St Marys depot, Koorong bookstore at Penrith, St John Ambulance, Kingswood TAFE, Kingswood Sports Club and PCYC Mt Druitt.

Ms O'Brien seeks more support from businesses to donate prizes and refreshments.
