Rich rewards

STEVE Blacker ticked one thing off his Christmas wish list on Saturday.

The Matraville sprinter is $8000 richer after he won the Blacktown City Christmas Gift 110-metre dash for cash at Blacktown Olympic Park at Rooty Hill.

It was one of 10 events held in what is regarded the richest athletics carnival in NSW.

About 120 able-bodied and wheelchair athletes from NSW, Victoria, Canberra and Queensland took part in sweltering weather for a chance to share in a prize pool worth more than $30,000.

``The competition and quality of the fields were first class,'' NSW Athletic League general manager Ken English said.

``Some of the best runners in Australia competed. It is the fourth-biggest event of its kind in Australia. The only disappointing thing was the crowd, due to the heat.''

Blacker won the 110-metre men's gift, just ahead of Concord's David Lee and Jacob Groth , from Homebush, who both shared in $5000 prizemoney.

Manly's Charlotte Van Veenendaal went home almost $4000 richer after she took out the women's 110-metre dash for cash.

Place-getters Trisha Greaves and Daniela Dietzold shared the remaining $2500 prizemoney.

Van Veenendaal had a busy meet. She added almost $1000 to her prizemoney tally when she backed up to win the 70-metre handicap sprint.

She also was runner-up in the women's invitational 100-metre handicap race.

The 70-metre race was sponsored by the Blacktown Sun, the Star's sister paper.

Andrew Pirie won the St Marys-Mt Druitt Star 300-metre open handicap.

It was an outstanding meet for ACT runners when Cuthbert Richardson won the novice 110 metres handicap, John Jakeman won the men's invitation 100 metre handicap, while Lauren Boden won's the women's invitation event.

North Coast runner Lenny Duroux won the 1000-metre event.

Chris Madden secured a wheelchair 200-metre and 400-metre double victory.

This was the second time the Blacktown event has been held.

English is keen to work with the venue and Blacktown Council to hold it again next year.

Meanwhile, NSW Premier League player Ben McFadgeon will represent the Penrith Panthers at the inaugural URM Rugby League's Fastest Man Sprint during the North Sydney Sprint Classic meet on Friday night at North Sydney Oval.

The winner takes home $10,000.
