BLACKTOWN Council is gearing up to host the 2009 Sports Awards Gala Presentation Night on Saturday, February 27, at Mt Druitt Workers Club.
On the night, more than 50 athletes from a number of sports will be represented, vying for accolades in a number of categories.
This year marks the 27th annual awards night and will see winners chosen in seven categories coach of the year; team of the year; under 12 encouragement award; sports administrator of the year; junior sportsperson of the year; 2009 sportsperson of the year; volunteer of the year.
Special guest on the night will be former Parramatta Eels and Australian test rugby league player Peter Sterling.
Throughout his extensive playing career, Sterling earned numerous awards, including World's Best Player in 1988, the Clive Churchill Medal in 1986 and Dally M Player of the Year in both 1986 and 1987.
Sterling was forced into early retirement due to a shoulder injury and went on to continue a career in sports commentary and as a presenter of The Footy Show.
Blacktown Mayor Charlie Lowles said:
``The Sports Awards presentation is always a great night to acknowledge the many achievers within our community.
``The 2009 awards are also a great opportunity to hear from Peter Sterling, who I have no doubt will inspire and motivate the audience to achieve their very best in their chosen sport.''
The 2009 Sports Person of the Year winner will take home $3000 prize money as well and will hold the title for the next 12 months.
