AN under-strength Penrith Panthers excelled in their first test of the season when they upstaged a rusty Parramatta Eels outfit 32-12 at CUA Stadium on Saturday night.
The Panthers claimed the Battle of the West Cup in outstanding form, defeating their neighbours with a six tries to two onslaught in front of 11,113 fans.
``It was a really nice performance,'' Panthers coach Matt Elliott said.
``We're not getting carried away, but it was a nice platform for us to build on.''
The home side dominated the opening minutes.
It wasn't long before they reaped the rewards, with a dazzling Wade Graham pass putting left-wing Shane Elford across the line in the fifth minute.
Eels superstar Jarryd Hayne had a starring role in the Panthers' second try, losing the ball in-goal and allowing halfback Luke Walsh to surge and score in the 14th minute.
The Panthers soon propelled themselves to a 10-0 lead and a beat-the-buzzer try to Michael Gordon in the 39th minute saw them sizzle to a 14-6 scoreline at half-time.
New recruit Travis Burns offered a brilliant second-half performance of two tries and one conversion to ensure a tight fight with Graham for the five-eighth position.
Elliott said he was still unsure who would be in the Panthers' starting side for their round one match against the Canberra Raiders.
``I've got absolutely no idea,'' he said.
``It's going to be really interesting but they have to play well to stay in the team.''
The Panthers' victory showed enormous promise for the 2010 season, with star play-makers Petero Civoniceva, Luke Lewis, Trent Waterhouse, Michael Jennings and others all absent from the trial game.
In the Toyota Cup match, Penrith had a 28-18 win over Parramatta.
