Junior league final ends in vicious brawl

22 Sep, 2009 10:49 AM
FOUR Blacktown City players were sent off after a massive brawl at the end of an under 16s junior rugby league grand final at Penrith's CUA Stadium on Saturday.

Three have been charged with kicking and one with punching.

They will appear before the Penrith junior rugby league judiciary tonight.

In addition, eight other Blacktown players and the team manager have been cited to appear on Thursday night.

They have been charged with breaking codes of conduct.

Penrith detectives are investigating the brawl and serious assault charges may be laid against one or more players. A Lower Blue Mountains player was taken to hospital with a fractured eye socket and broken nose.

Lower Blue Mountains won the game 22-4.

``It was disgusting, disgraceful,'' Penrith junior association chief executive officer Don Feltis said of the brawl.

``We support the police 100 per cent.''

Feltis said he was at the game and the association had viewed video of the incident before citing the eight other players.

``With a minute to go Blacktown City players starting pushing and shoving and then punching their opponents.

``One Lower Blue Mountains player was knocked to the ground and three players began kicking him.''

He said other Blacktown City players ran in from the bench to get involved and inflammatory gestures were made to the crowd.

Feltis said the team's manager had been cited for allegedly using offensive language and making threatening gestures to the match officials in the player's tunnel. `

`I must say we were very impressed with the Blacktown captain, who tried to restore order,'' Feltis said.

``The club will receive little sympathy.''

Feltis said the association was to meet last night to discuss what its approach to the club would be.

He said penalties would certainly be levied at players found guilty of offences.

Beyond that, the Blacktown club would probably be addressed about its responsibilities.

``Coaches must enforce discipline and send the right messages instead of this win-at-all-costs attitude,'' he said of a general problem facing the game.

``I've already apologised to the parents of the injured boy.''

I believe that this display of junior rugby league is disgraceful, nothing more than a bunch of sore losers if you ask me.
