League trial to decide which west is best

16 Feb, 2010 09:44 AM
Penrith Panthers will kick off their 2010 season this Saturday night at CUA Stadium.

They tackle 2009 NRL grand finalists Parramatta Eels in the second year of the Battle of the West Cup.

The Eels got their pre-season underway on Sunday with a 34-20 loss against St George Illawarra in Perth.

It's big night for sport in western Sydney, where 10,000 AFL fans will pack Blacktown Olympic Park for a pre-season NAB game involving the Sydney Swans and Carlton.

A Panthers spokesman expected a crowd of around 12,000 for the rugby league trial.

Recruits Daine Laurie, Nigel Plum, Adrian Purtell, Travis Burns and David Simmons will wear the Panthers jersey for the first time, as will Kevin Kingston against his former team.

Action kicks off at 3pm when Panthers feeder club Windsor Wolves will play a trial against Wentworthville, followed by an under-20s match between the Panthers and Eels at 5.15pm.

The NRL trial will kick off at 7.30pm consisting of a 40 minute first half, while the second half will consist of two 20 minute quarters.

There is no reserve seating.

Panthers ticketed members can show their membership passes for free entry.

Tickets are $10 adults, $5 children/concession or $20 for a family pass.

Meanwhile, Panthers junior representative teams will play their round two games against Cronulla earlier on the day.

The Harold Matthews under-16s match kicks off at noon, followed by the under-18s SG Ball at 1.30pm.

Entry is $5, which is administered through the Junior League and NSW Rugby League.
