Panthers fans look ahead with pride and joy

16 Feb, 2010 08:35 AM
SCORES of fans braved the rain to meet their favourite players and greet the newest recruits at this year's Penrith Panthers fan day at CUA Stadium earlier this month.

Fans young and old, some locals and others from afar, snapped photos and grabbed autographs from the team and it seemed they had nothing but confidence for the 2010 season.

Chris Randall, 28, of Cranebrook, attended the day with his wife and son and said he had been a fan since primary school.

``I'm pretty confident for a top-four finish, probably the most confident I've been since we last won the premiership, especially with the new guys coming in,'' he said.

``Nigel Plum, Daine Laurie and Travis Burns will add aggression and Kevin Kingston should add good leadership to the team.''

Mr Randall said his family were loyal supporters who attended every Panthers game, both home and away.

And 14-month-old son Jayden is no exception. ``He would've gone to at least half the home games last year.'' Mr Randall said.

``We'll definitely bring him up a fan!''

When asked what his family would say if they could give the team a message, they replied: ``It's been a long wait, so fire up and give it your all to get us to the top!''

Lifelong fan Greg Walton, 52, also travelled to the day with his son Brendan, 26, of Newcastle.

``Our chances are pretty good this year,'' he said. ``I'd say we're a sure thing to make the finals. The club has bought well so I'd like to see them at least in the top four. They just need to work on consistency.''

He said it was days such as the fan day that he liked most about the club. ``It's great to get to see behind the scenes and have the players accessible to the fans. It's a real boost and it makes you feel part of the club.''

Also travelling from afar to revel in the Panthers camaraderie were Joel Scrivener, 24, and Vanessa Loje, 21, of Greenwich in North Sydney.

``We've been fans all our lives and this season looks very promising,'' Joel said.

``The new players have added more depth and we have some decent halves who should score some big points. I think we have as good a chance as anyone to win the premiership.''

Donna Reece, 44, attended the day with siblings Jayden and Lauren Rosato, of Erskine Park.

Donna said she was also a life-long fan while Jayden's favourite player is Michael Jennings.

``We just hope they win and try their best,'' Donna said.

At a sponsor's lunch with players before the fan's signing session, coach Matthew Elliott made a pledge to all supporters.

``Our commitment is to show up to every game expecting to win and being prepared to win and we'll be doing everything we possibly can to make sure that's the result,'' he said.
