Shooting range opens doors

10 Nov, 2009 03:04 PM
IF YOU'VE ever fancied yourself a budding marksman here's your chance to take aim.

On Sunday the St Marys Indoor Shooting Centre will host its annual open day, when anyone over age 12 is welcome to test their skills at pistol and rifle shooting under the supervision of experienced instructors.

``This is an opportunity for people who may not know a great deal about our sport to try it in a safe and organised environment,'' said centre range manager Ali Newbery.

``Those who turn up can learn about a whole range of the different skills and facets associated with the sport, which they might not even know existed.

``Information will be provided on how to get started in the sport, the various disciplines and competitions, firearms collecting, hunting and much more.''

The popularity of target-shooting sports has risen over the past three years, as evidenced by strong increases in membership, particularly among women and juniors.

The St Marys Junior Development program, which serves as an introductory course for newcomers to the sport, teaches discipline, safety and accuracy.

``One of the great things about our sport is that it is open to people of all ages and abilities,'' Ms Newbery said.

``The shooting sports place greater emphasis on the mental, rather than physical aspects associated with other sports but still teaches self control, hand-eye co-ordination and decision-making skills.''

The open day is from 10am to 3pm. Entry is free. People aged 12 to 17 must have parental permission to handle firearms. Parents must present photo ID on the day.
