F1 efforts pay off

PLUMPTON High School engineering students had a successful run in the F1 Schools National Technology Challenge in Geelong last month.

The OneSteel Phoenix 5 racing team won the marketing award.

Design engineer Adeel Shams was proud of the boys' enthusiasm.

"We used Pro/ENGINEER CAD Software, used by the big companies," he said.

"Because we chose to be professional it took us more time to learn how to use the system.

"Other teams chose more simple software.

"With only five members in the team it was important to meet once a day to prepare ourselves."

Plumpton High School teacher Stuart Thomson said he was very proud of what the team had achieved in such a small time.

"OneSteel donated $2000 to fund the project which allowed us to expand our resources," Mr Thomson said.

"It gave the team the initiative to use OneSteel as their sponsor title, which mirrored the way the F1 world really works, making the team stand out."

Next year the team hopes to prepare well in advance for the challenge.
