THIS is your first exclusive sneak peek of what Mount Druitt Hospital will look like this time next year.
Construction has begun on the $324 million expansion of Blacktown Mount Druitt Hospital.
Mount Druitt expansions include a more efficient emergency department, a double-the-size dental capacity, 10 additional beds in the rehabilitation ward and a relocated and refurbished foyer.
"Mount Druitt is a growing community and, as a part of that, the hospital needs to grow for a higher delivery of care," Blacktown Mount Druitt Hospital transition manager Peter Rophail told the Star.
"It's a special hospital that's well connected to its community.
"The changes will service the community in the years ahead.
"It will be a world class hospital providing world class care to the people of Mount Druitt."
The new look emergency department will have an urgent care centre, a new paediatric treatment room, an extra resuscitation bay and an improved ambulance bay.
There will also be a "fast track" service for patients who need minor procedures such as stitches, fracture management and plastering.
And improved access to X-rays, other radiology and pathology should reduce waiting times.
"The urgent care centre will ensure patients are seen more quickly and given appropriate care at the right time," Mr Rophail said.
"The dental facility will have eight extra chairs.
"The new main entrance will have a fresh, modern look to provide a more pleasant and patient-friendly environment."
Patients and visitors can expect minor changes in the months ahead, all of which will be signposted.
The emergency department will remain open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
"There will be work going on everywhere you look," Mr Peter Rophail said.
"We've planned the expansion very carefully to ensure there are no changes to existing services. The first part is external work and will not affect patients for the first four to five months. There will also be infrastructure upgrades to power to keep the hospital running long term."
