Garage Sale Trail
Blacktown is one of 110 councils across Australia that will get behind this year's Garage Sale Trail.
In its third year, the national community event encourages Australians to come together on October 26 to reduce waste and recycle items.
"While Garage Sale Trail generates local economic activity and provides residents with a fun day of buying, selling and connecting with local people, the organisation has a very important aim: to reduce waste and reuse items which otherwise might end up in landfill," Blacktown mayor Len Robinson said.
"I am encouraging the Blacktown City community to register their garage sales now to be part of what is fast becoming one of the largest sustainability and community events in Australia."
The event has redistributed one million items from landfill, generated more than $1 million in local economic activity, facilitated $3 million in fund-raising and created hundreds of thousands of neighbourly connections.
Registration is available to individuals, households, local businesses, schools, community groups, makers and creators, cultural institutions and charities.
Gala day for kids
A free gala day for children will be held in Werrington on September 26.
The event, for children enrolled in council's Vacation Care, will be held at Yoorami Children's Centre, Cottage Street, Werrington, 10am-2pm.
This annual event is run by Penrith Council's Children's Services and local businesses.
