The Australian PGA Seniors Championship at Richmond Golf Club next week will now be a charity fund-raiser for NSW bushfire victims.
Group chief executive Kimberley Talbot said the club – potentially in the path of the fires – considered postponing the event but decided to go ahead with the tournament to raise money.
“So many people have lost so much in the fires and an event like this not only gives people a break from thinking about the fires but also raises valuable funds for the rebuilding efforts,” Ms Talbot said.
Richmond Rotary will assist with the fund-raising efforts and manage the donations.
Clubs NSW, the RSL Services Association and the PGA are also reaching out to sponsors, supporters and other clubs in the region for support.
“Aside from the purse, we will be putting every dollar from the tournament back into fire related charities and hopefully that goes some way to help repair the physical and psychological damage that has been done,” Ms Talbot said.
“We will ensure the local people are not missed when it comes to the distribution of the funds and Rotary will assist us with doing so.”
Ms Talbot said it was unfortunate that marketing of the event, which began months ago, involved fire in the logo, but the event and fund-raiser will be held respectfully and to benefit the community.
The Australian Seniors PGA is part of the E-Z-GO PGA Legends Tour and is expected to attract some of Australia’s best over 50s tournament professionals, all competing for a prize purse of $70,000.
It is the first time Richmond Golf Club has been selected for involvement in the tour.
The field includes former US PGA champion Wayne Grady and some of Australia's best known golfers such as Rodger Davis, Brian Jones, Mike Harwood, Terry Price and Mark Clayton.
“We've worked really hard to make sure this tournament is a success and we are so proud to be staging it. These fires have just strengthened our resolve to make it the best event we possibly can,'' Ms Talbot said.
