Estate race day
Australian rock legend James Reyne will perform at the inaugural Carlton Mid Picnic Race Day at Fernhill Estate on November 9.
The free concert will be after the last race at the historic venue.
The Carlton Mid Picnic Race Day was the vision of new Fernhill owners Brenda and Simon Tripp who are opening the private estate to the public.
It coincides with Emirates Stakes Day at Flemington and Saturday racing at Royal Randwick.
The day will feature six picnic races including the $25,000 Carlton Mid Fernhill Cup, live entertainment, a giant food fare, free children's activities, betting facilities.
The races are called live by 2GB's Ray Hadley.
Parking is available at the venue for $20 or at Penrith Paceway for $5.
A free shuttle bus will run between Penrith station and Fernhill Estate. Save 25 per cent off the general entry price by prepurchasing tickets.
Dog left to die
A Claremont Meadows woman faced Mount Druitt Local Court after her labrador dog named Bailey was found left to die on the ground next to an empty food bowl.
Animal Welfare League inspectors went to the home in June following a tip-off.
Veterinarians provided life-saving treatment for the dog, who weighed 15kg, less than half the weight of an average labrador.
Bailey now weighs 34kg
and will go to a new home.
The former owner pleaded guilty to failing to provide sufficient care under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
She was sentenced to pay all costs for Bailey's treatment and care, given a two-year good behaviour Bond and banned from owning a dog in that period.
