Traffic volumes are still higher than usual but there has been a general easing in the earlier delays holidaymakers had faced when heading south and north out of Sydney on Saturday afternoon.
Queues on the Pacific Highway had seen commuters stuck in traffic jams of up to 12 kilometres long about 1.30pm.
A Transport Management Centre spokesman said earlier delays northbound on the highway at Macksville, Woodburn and Ewingsdale, where congestion was adding up to 60 minutes to travel time, were now easing.
‘‘There are now no significant delays, there is more traffic on the roads, with people heading off on holidays, but the delays are no longer significant,’’ the spokesman said.
He said that on the NSW south coast, the earlier southbound delays on the Princes Highway at Gerringong, which had been causing queues of six kilometres long, were also easing.
The spokesman said that earlier traffic jams within Sydney had also cleared.
‘‘There are also no current accidents or break downs in Sydney at the moment, everything is quiet.’’
He said traffic volumes are still higher than usual and traffic commanders will continue to monitor both the Pacific Highway and the Princes Highway this evening.
“Motorists are advised to plan their trip, allow plenty of additional travel time, expect delays and take regular breaks.’’
