Shopping centre plans on the shelf for 15 years

IT’S been 15 years since Bidwill had a functioning shopping centre, despite long-running promises from Carlisle Plaza developers.

Bidwill Hotel sells basics but to do a weekly shop, residents must travel to nearby suburbs.

Developers promised the centre would open in Easter 2009, but all Carlisle Plaza consists of today is a takeaway shop.

Urban Neighbours of Hope director Jon Owen said the community needs better access to fruit and vegetables.

Bidwill Uniting Church team leader John Dacey said: ‘‘There is a lot of energy within the community for something good to happen about the shopping centre.’’

The department of Family and Community Services owns the land on which Carlisle Plaza stands.

‘‘There are no issues from the Family and Community Services perspective which are causing a delay,’’ a spokesman said.

‘‘In fact, we are keen for the developer to have a fully operating centre as soon possible.’’
