Warriors beat Saints to win U-21s comp

BLACKTOWN are the 2013/2014 Poidevin Gray cricket champions.

The young Warriors emphasised the abundant talent in the extended club by winning the most time-honoured junior competition in Sydney grade cricket.

Blacktown beat St George in the under-21s final at Joe McAleer Oval on Sunday and it was only appropriate the most promising young player in the club led the way.

Nathan Sowter had received recognition of that status when selected for NSW seconds against Victoria seconds during the week.

On Sunday the leg-spinning allrounder hit an unbeaten 63 as Blacktown scored 9-171.

It proved to be enough, as St George were dismissed for 167 in a nailbiter. Nathan Hinton took 3-26 and Grant McCartin 2-18.

Sowter's contribution was 1-34 from 10 overs.

Alas, there was no such good news from Blacktown's first grade encounter with St George on Saturday.

After a collapse to better Australia's in the second Test against South Africa they took their score to 1-56, Blacktown lost 9-22 and fell short of the required 185.
