Cops in line for award

The countdown is on to find out who will be recognised as St Marys' top cop for 2013.

All will be revealed at the fifth St Marys Police Officer of the Year awards on Wednesday, April 2, at St Marys Rugby League Club.

There were 35 nominations for these community and peer awards and they have been whittled down to five finalists in each category.

In the running for the community award are Detective Sergeant Brad Element, Constable Daniel Peen, Inspector Karen Clougher, Constable Terence Lee and Leading Senior Constable Brett Henry.

Detective Senior Constable Geoff Kendall, Senior Constables Danielle Corliss, David Colbourn and Ben Wilshaw and Constable Daniel Hadley — the son of 2GB radio presenter Ray Hadley — are in the running for the peer award.

"There's a good mixture of old and new," said awards chairman Chris Miller.

"There are a few young constables nominated, which encourages them."

Community finalist Detective Sergeant Brad Element has been in the police force for 16 years and at St Marys for three. He investigates major crimes in the local area and complex cases such as missing persons.

"It was a wonderful surprise to be nominated as a finalist," he said. "It's good for the community to recognise the good work cops do."

Tickets cost $35, including a three-course meal.

Details: Chris Miller, 0417 409 720.
