IN BRIEF

April Falls Day

This week St Marys Pharmacy and Surgery will be supporting April Falls Day (April 1) to increase the awareness of the dangers of older people falling.

Falls are one of the most common preventable causes of hospital admission and death in older people, with one in three people over 65 expected to have at least one fall over the next 12 months.

Everyone is encouraged to follow simple steps — removing clutter and ensuring there's adequate lighting in walkways, marking edges of steps with slip-resistant strips and installing handrails — will go a long way in preventing falls.

Pharmacist Luu Dang said falls can cause both mental and physical distress.

At St Marys Pharmacy the staff will be showing people simple exercises to increase balance and strength to prevent falls.
