Chifley College garden grows school pride

A new garden area at Chifley College’s Bidwill campus has turned a wasted 25 metre patch of dirt into a well-used space.

The garden was built two weeks ago with a $10,000 community investment grant from civil engineering company Leighton Contractors and project labour and supervision from the ETTT Alliance, which includes Transport for NSW and Lend Lease.

An aboriginal mural painted by ex-student Cassandra Pickering, who graduated in 2011, hangs on the wall beside the garden.

Building and construction and life education unit students helped to build the garden, which was planted with natives including grevilleas, bottle brush, lilli pilli and dwarf christmas bush.

‘‘It will be used as an outdoor learning area and was built to brighten the school and give kids pride and ownership in the school,’’ literacy support teacher Joanna Horvat said.
