NEWCASTLE became the port in a storm for the Pacific Dawn on Wednesday, hosting the superliner for the first time as it fled the wrath of Cyclone Ita.
The 70,000-tonne ship, which boasts 184 balcony rooms as well as nine bars and two pools, changed course to make its maiden stop in Newcastle early on Wednesday.
Originally due to leave Brisbane on Saturday for a cruise along the Queensland coast, the superliner instead motored south to avoid potential damage from Cyclone Ita.
Passengers were given almost a whole day in Newcastle on Wednesday, arriving about 6am and departing just after dark.
P&O Cruises spokesman David Jones said the unscheduled stop was a pleasant one.
‘‘The warmth of the welcome and the many local attractions certainly helped ease any disappointment passengers might have experienced over the unavoidable change,’’ Mr Jones said. ‘‘We want to thank the people of Newcastle and the Hunter for making Pacific Dawn’s passengers so welcome.’’
Pacific Dawn will return to the Hunter for short cruises out of Brisbane from March next year.
