One soccer club is enough, residents say

BENALLA Crescent residents are opposed to a Blacktown Council proposal to move St Patrick’s Soccer Club to Harvey Park.

Marayong Soccer Club already uses the venue and residents believe one club is enough.

‘‘The street isn’t big enough to cope with higher volumes of traffic,’’ resident Steve Apalakis said.

‘‘There’s talk it would mean extra amenities in the form of shipping containers in front of our homes. We want the the park left as it is. We don’t want two clubs using it.’’

Residents have no problem with the existing club using Harvey Park. ‘‘The only time traffic is a problem is on gala and presentation days. That’s only twice a year.’’

Currently based at Anne Aquilina Reserve at Rooty Hill, the St Patrick’s club was told during the off-season to find a new home.

Benalla Crescent residents were first told about a temporary upgrade to the park on January6 and were given nine days to comment. They didn’t learn of the St Patrick’s move until an on-site meeting later that month.

The council started building to extend the car park but has since stopped.

‘‘This green space is taken away from us,’’ Mr Apalakis said. ‘‘We want it left for other recreational uses.’’
