Public art in Parklands
The most ambitious ever temporary public art project in western Sydney will float up to 80 metres off the ground, illuminating 25 hectares of Bungarribee over nine nights this month.
Sleepers Awake is a collaboration between Western Sydney Parklands Trust and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia.
From May 17 to 25 at dusk, a 12-metre diametre illuminated floating sculpture will appear like a second moon in the night sky.
More than 40 acts and 150 performers ranging from hip-hop to ballet, film and opera will activate this once vacant land and make history by being part of the transformation.
The aim is to raise awareness about Western Sydney Parklands.
"We liked the idea of a population of an entire town waking after a long, long sleep to finally see for the first time their surroundings," director Suellen Fitzgerald said.
Military service recognised
Residents in the federal Chifley electorate who have served in wars, conflicts or peace operations are invited to apply for certificates of appreciation.
The certificates will be available through the Saluting Their Service commemorations as expressions of gratitude to those who served in the defence forces here and/or overseas since World War II.
"Members within the Chifley electorate have a very proud record of military service and I am particularly pleased to see this is being further recognised through the certificates of appreciation," said Chifley MP Ed Husic. Family members of deceased servicemen and women can also apply.
Power price rise warning
NSW Opposition Leader John Robertson and Labor candidate for Londonderry Prue Car have warned families will suffer increased power prices under Premier Mike Baird's plans to fully privatise electricity.
The Premier spent his first days in the job outlining plans to sell-off electricity poles and wires.
"Under the Liberal government household electricity bills have already risen by an average of 42.6 per cent - that's an increase of $600 since 2011."
Mrs Car said it would further increase prices.
