A NEW junior rugby union has been launched in Penrith to improve the code's presence in western Sydney.

"Rugby had to respond to the predicted population growth in western Sydney," Penrith District Junior Rugby Union Academy president Chris Hicks said.

Those involved in the recently formed Junior District Academy believe the opportunities they are creating on, and off the field, will develop Super Rugby talent and Wallabies through their own representative pathway.

Penrith RSL JRUC intends to grow from the ground up and are keen to focus on minis, specifically the under-6s and under-7s.

Rugby in those age groups is non-tackle with greater focus on skills including evasion, catching and passing. Training is on Tuesdays at Jamison Park from 4.15pm to 5.15pm.

The skills, drills and modified games aim to improve gross motor skills and hand-eye co-ordination.

Registration is $20 and includes a kit.
