Jerry Seinfeld, the man we can hold responsible for the dad jeans phenomenon and the white puffy shirt fashion faux pas of the '90s, has made his debut as a model.
Sixty-year-old Seinfeld stars in the spring 2015 campaign for American fashion label Rag & Bone alongside a handful of male models, NBA star Carmelo Anthony and Mumford & Sons frontman Ben Lovett.
The comedian, looking relaxed in front of the camera, was scouted by Rag & Bone co-founders David Neville and Marcus Wainwright for their “photo project” which went on display at an art gallery in New York last week. The images from the exhibition, which includes famous and not so famous faces, will become the look book for the new menswear collection and replace the label’s show at New York Fashion Week in September.
“It’s a pretty eclectic group. We don’t care if they’re recognisable. The point was to present a cross-section of people who we think are awesome or cool. You don’t have to be a celebrity to matter,” Wainwright told Women’s Wear Daily.
Although a stylist dressed Seinfeld and the other stars of the campaign, according to WWD many adjusted the outfits to better reflect their own personal taste.
In his two portraits, the creator of Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee web series, Seinfeld’s all black ensemble is broken up by a pair of pinstripe pants Elaine would approve of (and probably wear) and stark white ribbed socks teamed with black suede ankle boots.
“The concept is rooted in the idea of reality. These are real people and this is the way they dress in their day-to-day lives,” Neville said.
“Our message for our menswear is real people in real clothes. We use beautiful fabrics and silhouettes, but they’re not screaming at you. And this concept allows us to do that.”
Renowned fashion and skating photographer Andreas Laszlo Konrath shot the campaign.
Seinfeld’s high fashion debut comes as the popular sitcom, which he created and christened with fellow comedian Larry David, turned 25.
