About 11am, the cables fell across the nearby rail line, blocking trains and prompting City Rail to organise bus travel between Penrith and Blacktown stations.

Firefighters were called to the grass fire in Hobart Street and to a smouldering power pole and collapsed wires on the corner of Hewitt Street and the Great Western Highway in Colyton.

About 2870 residents lost power, but Integral Energy managed to restore electricity to all but 47 customers within a short time.

Spokesmen for Integral Energy and Fire & Rescue NSW said investigators were looking into why the power lines collapsed.

No one was injured and no properties have been damaged.
