BLACKTOWN Council has won a national award for its redevelopment of Blacktown Showground.
It took out the Parks and Leisure Australia Playspace award for delivering Australia's latest and most outstanding play and recreation area in the projects over $1 million category.
The award recognises the creative design and construction of an outstanding play space that the council delivered through the new $1.4 million play area on Richmond Road, Blacktown.
It consists of a "splash pad" water play area, junior, senior and low water use playgrounds with spray jets, swings, balance beams, water tunnels, climbing equipment, concrete and river pebble water maze.
It follows the 2014 Parks and Leisure Australia Regional Award (NSW/ACT) earlier this year.
"We asked our community what they wanted as part of their showground and we delivered it," mayor Len Robinson said.
"A multi-faceted play area, with four playground spaces for different ages, skill levels and abilities.
"Winning this national award demonstrates Blacktown Council's skill and leadership in delivering outstanding community facilities," he said.
The council's $16 million stage one redevelopment of Blacktown Showground opened two years ago, with the final stages of the play area completed last May.
