A body has been found after a home was gutted by fire in the NSW town of Griffith on Wednesday.
At 6.10pm emergency services were called to Macarthur Street in Griffith, in the state's south west, where a home was well alight.
A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesperson said the home was a single-storey weatherboard cottage with a tin roof.
"The fire was in the front room which is where they found the body. It is believed that is where the fire started," he said.
"A neighbour heard someone calling for help and tried to get in through the front of the house with a garden hose, but couldn't do any good."
Not long after, 15 firefighters arrived at the scene and discovered the body after completing a search and rescue.
Brett Woolnough was walking past the property when he saw the fire.
"I saw a heap of black smoke and flames. It was scary," he told The Area News.
Police forensics will return to the scene on Thursday morning to investigate the cause of the fire.
A forensic examination is necessary to formally identify the body.
