A woman was taken to hospital in a serious condition on Friday after undergoing a cosmetic procedure at a clinic in Sydney's west.
Paramedics were called to The Cosmetic Institute in Parramatta about 10.15am on Friday to reports that a woman, thought to be aged about 20, had suffered a cardiac arrest, was unconscious and not breathing.
A NSW Ambulance spokeswoman confirmed a patient was taken to Westmead Hospital in a serious condition, but she said no further details were available about the case.
It is understood staff at the clinic used a defibrillator and performed CPR on the woman before paramedics arrived.
David Segal, the managing director of The Cosmetic Institute, said he could not go into specific details about the case because of patient confidentiality.
However, he said the woman was believed to have had a reaction to the anaesthetic.
"I'm pleased to hear the patient is up and awake, is currently being held at Westmead Hospital just for further testing and observation, but she's up and awake and she's fine," Mr Segal said.
He said it was protocol for staff to call an ambulance to get a patient to hospital "as quickly as possible".
On Friday evening Westmead Hospital confirmed the woman is in a stable condition.
The institute, which also has offices in Bondi, advertises a number of procedures on its website, including liposuction, breast augmentation, eyelid rejuvenation and labioplasty. Most of the procedures undertaken there are breast augmentations.
Mr Segal said he could not divulge what procedure the woman was having done at the time.
He said The Cosmetic Institute was an internationally accredited facility, and the largest healthcare provider of cosmetic surgery in Australia.
"We've performed well over 10,000 procedures, and ... with any type of procedure that you undergo, there are always going to be risks associated with it," he said.
A NSW Police spokeswoman said police were not involved in the incident.
