Businesses look to positive change for St Marys

PENRITH Council has appointed eight members to the St Marys Town Centre Corporation board to replace the existing town centre management committee on September 26.

A yet-to-be-named Penrith councillor will be the ninth board member.

The new corporation will meet from early October.

"We look forward to revitalising St Marys," a council spokesman said.

St Marys Band Club chief executive, Marlene Shipley, is one of the new faces, wanting to share her marketing expertise and enthusiasm, with a focus on improving St Marys in long-term, rather than in short-term, fixes.

"We need to market St Marys in a more positive way," Mrs Shipley said. "Some shopkeepers could make more effort to tidy up."

Fusion Western Sydney chief executive Dave Hammond will represent the views of under-25s.

Current town centre chairman Steve Perry is one of four members who will stay on.

Mr Perry said the station end of Queen Street needed most attention, also echoed by many readers on the Star's Facebook page.

"It sends the wrong message and the rest of the street suffers," he said.

A chairperson is yet to be decided to head the committee, contrary to what was reported in another local publication last week.
