THE City women's cricket team has retained the Lorna Thomas Trophy after a 3-1 series victory over their Country rivals at Blacktown International Sportspark on Saturday.
Teams went into the weekend's matches with the series level at one game apiece after the first two T20 matches were played a week earlier.
Both sides were boosted with the return of several NSW Breakers players who had missed the opening fixtures because of an Australian Youth team camp.
Playing on a slow wicket, Country batted first in the first game of the day and scored 5-101 from their 20 overs.
Alex Blackwell top scored with 31 while Kara Sutherland hit a handy 27 not out.
City reached the target with seven wickets to spare with the experience of Lisa Sthalekar (42) and Rachael Haynes (26) leading the way.
As defending champions, this result meant City had retained the Lorna Thomas Trophy, with a drawn series the best outcome Country could now achieve.
Claire Koski also made 24 while Erin Osborne (2-18) and Taryn Heddo (2-11) returned the best figures for Country.
The NSW Breakers women's side will be based at Blacktown International Sportspark this season for their three rounds of home matches.
Their first games for the season will be the 'local derby' against the ACT, then Western Australia followed by Tasmania.
