Hubbub litter campaign sees Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo cleaning the streets of London

Environmental charity Hubbub have established a ingenious campaign to reduce the amount of litter in Central London by erecting large boxes where smokers can vote on a wide range of sporting questions simply by disposing of their cigarette butts in the appropriate column.

The question over the two football icons was the first to be tested outside the Embankment tube station, and has proved popular with local smokers.

Judging by posts on social media, the Real Madrid and Portugal star appears to be in the lead, with his mountain of trash in pole position.

The new scheme has struck a chord on social media, and is set to stay, with new sports questions posted each week. There was no clear favourite as to who would win the Ashes, while The Big Smoke's smokers preferred to watch the Italian Grand Prix over the US Open.

The approach is a contrast to the hardline stance the Australian government has taken to stamp out smoking, but has the potential to be a popular form of litter management in the streets of our cities.

The polarising views on Robbie Farah's fall-out with Wests Tigers would certainly keep many cigarette butts out of drains this week - while smokers hopeful of Jarryd Hayne landing the gig in San Francisco could make their presence felt against the naysayers.

Other novel ideas from the 'Neat Streets' campaign include the 'Fumo Musical smoker's pole' which plays melodies in return for used cigarette butts, and the 'Peppermint Pointillist', a join-the-dots style noticeboard for sticking used chewing gum to.
