Add water for style

A water feature can turn your garden from a bare and uninteresting place to an area which has natural beauty, tranquillity and sensuality.

It can create a feeling of calmness and is an important part of not only garden design but also Feng Shui — the philosophy that points out that water in the home, garden and work place brings calmness and good fortune.

The sound of flowing water can also add to the natural serenity of the design.

Common water features include the pond, fountain, pool water feature and the wall feature and can be made from various materials including stone, plastic, rock, glass and steel.

Category manager of hydraulics at Zodiac, Jason Bonello said homeowners were building water features in their gardens and pools to add value to their home.

"We have noticed that many people are adding water features so they can add elegance and style to their home's overall look," Mr Bonello said.

"You can purchase a water feature for under $500. However, even such an affordable feature can add substantial value to your home because you are adding beauty and elegance to the overall style and landscape of the home."

Early water feature designs included decorative ponds and water fountains.

Modern water features now range from small bowls, wall rock features to water spurting out of giant art deco structures.

Some are designed to enhance the visual appeal of a garden while others are designed to improve and promote good mental health.

"I've noticed people choosing the laminar jets and water features that include lighting," he said.

"The LED lighting adds an extra visual dimension to the overall design.

"The lighting also adds a prestigious style to the water feature."

However, before adding a water feature to the garden or pool, Mr Bonello recommends to do some research.

"You need to check with your local council to see whether you have permission to add a water feature to your property," he said.

"You also need to check that you have the right plumbing and that you have enough space to add a water feature."
