DRAYTON South workers are putting their colours on display – and they are hi-vis.
Workers are using the distinctive work clothes of their industry as part of a protest swamping social media in the Upper Hunter.
The I Support the Drayton South Project Facebook group has been filled with photos of businesses, miners and homes bearing the bright orange shirts of mine workers hit by the change.
Support is flowing from Scone, Muswellbrook and further afield, with some estimated more than 100 hi-vis shirs are stuck to a bared wire fence on Drayton property.
Many bear messages of fury and frustration, including one from a fourth-year apprentice “with no future”.
Drayton South, which was denied its extension on Friday, has been vehemently opposed by nearby horse studs.
In its decision to deny the mine’s application the Planning Assessment Commission said it was "deeply saddened" by the implications of its recommendation on the 312 workers and 97 contractors at the existing Drayton mine who had hoped to work at the Drayton South expansion.
