A 68-year-old man drowned when his car was swept away by floodwaters near Bundaberg in the early hours of Sunday morning.
It was one of four calls for help made to swift water rescue crews in the region after heavy rainfall on Saturday, which has prompted exasperation from authorities, who say motorists are still not heeding the "if it's flooded, forget it" message.
More storm activity is forecast to hit the wider Burnett Wide Bay region on Sunday afternoon extending north to Gladstone and south into the northern Sunshine Coast area.
The man and his brother were attempting to cross a flooded creek in rural St Kilda, about 70 kilometres south west of Bundaberg, just after 1am on Sunday, when their car became stranded.
The man's brother was able to extricate himself from the car to raise the alarm, however, his brother was trapped inside.
Rescue crews found the man in his car 150 metres downstream about 2.20am.
Elsewhere in the region, Queensland Fire and Emergency Service rescue crews guided four people and a horse out of floodwaters after their car and a horse float became stranded at Apple Tree Creek near Childers just before 3am.
Another person was rescued from a tree surrounded by floodwaters at Wallaville, close to where the man later drowned, just after 10pm.
Rescue crews were also called to Glenwood, south of Maryborough, after reports people had climbed onto the roof of a car stuck in floodwaters at 10.40pm.
QFES north coast region superintendent John Bolger said the number of people who continue to ignore the "if its flooded, forget it" was a source of exasperation for the service.
"It's a very real message and it's directed at each and every person, when you are confronted with it, particularly at night, turn around and find an alternate route," he said.
"One half of our job spends an awful amount of time on prevention to eliminate the response, so sometimes when we do respond we are puzzled at why people have done it."
With rainfall tipped to continue again on Sunday, Superintendent Bolger urged people in the region to delay non-essential travel.
"If you don't need to travel, enjoy Sunday at home. If you must be on the road consider your safety and the safety of your passengers, if it's flooded, forget it," he said.
"People sometimes overestimate the capabilities of their vehicles or put themselves at undue pressure of being in a certain place at a certain time but that type of persistence can sometimes have a tragic outcome, as we unfortunately saw last night."
