Vunivalu's try, his second on debut, was the second of three Melbourne four-pointers over a period of 15 minutes that saw them charge from eight points behind to lead by six, only for a Kevin Naiqama try and then a penalty goal from Jordan Rankin to level the scores with less than two minutes remaining.
What followed were a series of unsuccessful field-goal attempts from Tigers five-eight Mitchell Moses, Storm captain Cameron Smith, Tigers halfback Luke Brooks and No.7 Cooper Cronk before Cronk stepped up to clinch the affair, and the visitors' fifth win of the season, with this second shot.
The Tigers had cause to possibly feel hard done by – their claim for a penalty try in the first half was also denied, having to settle for Storm three-quarter Richard Kennar being sent to the sin-bin – but Taylor did not wish to find excuses.
"We were there – we got to extra-time. We had the chance to kick two field goals and what is great is the way we got to extra time," he said.
"We were behind by six points and we fought our way to get the scores level. We didn't try to come up with miracles and that is what we're trying hard to improve.
"We didn't get the result tonight but the fight was great and that's what it takes in this competition.
"That's progress for us. Our fans should be excited about the future for Wests Tigers.
Taylor also declined to discuss a trip by Melbourne giant Nelson Asofa-Solomona on Moses for which he was penalised in the second half.
The Storm were again far from their usual clinical selves but did enough.
"There is one part of the game that we're struggling with at the moment and that's inside the opposition 20. We've got no other issues at all," Smith said. "Once we sort that out hopefully we'll turn the corner and score some points and make it a bit easier on ourselves.
"(Cronk) just knows how to get himself in the right position there and knows when to pull the trigger basically, to have a shot. I thought he was going to wait a tackle too long in that last set but he just knew what position to put himself in and he's very calm in those situations...he's done it on some pretty big stages before."
