For 115 years, members of the House of Representatives have voted the same way when called upon to decide on matters of national significance. When a vote is called, they are summoned to the chamber, they divide to opposite sides and party whips manually count the numbers.
Now, tradition is set for a shake-up after a committee of MPs recommended Parliament adopt electronic voting.
The committee has argued providing swipe cards, touch cards or electronic tokens to register votes would boost efficiency and transparency.
Committee chair Andrew Southcott said the status quo means too much time - an average of six and half minutes - is spent counting votes and a new system would allow results to be published immediately.
However, Dr Southcott and the committee want tradition to be preserved.
"We still believe that voting should occur in the chamber and we should retain the tradition of dividing to the left and right of the chair," Dr Southcott said.
"To have people not attending would make it quite a sterile process. People still like the tradition and the theatre."
A revamped system would see members gather on the appropriate side of the chamber and use their device on electronic readers located at every seat. Results could then be displayed inside the chamber and possible made available to outside observers and the TV broadcast.
Dr Southcott also pointed to the vulnerability of the old-fashioned system to gaming and poor eyesight of whips.
"In the past, there have been government whips who were notorious for running a slow count, on both sides. With one side, it was a strategic decision to run a slow count. On the other side, I think it was almost a visual problem - they had trouble recognising the faces.
"It can be gamed and in the hung Parliament it was gamed. They would have a long division to strategically count down the clock."
The committee said a survey of MPs found an "overwhelmingly positive response" to the technology upgrade.
The issue was first examined in the 1970s, when the US Congress adopted electronic voting.
Dr Southcott said roughly 57 per cent of parliaments across the globe now have some form of electronic voting.
The committee has also recommended that committee chairs be elected by the House, rather than selected by the prime minister in order to "restore the primacy of the Parliament" over the executive.
The government is yet to respond to the report.
